Designing Autonomous Race Car Models for Learning Advanced Topics in Hard Real-Time System

چکیده
The purpose of this chapter is to illustrate the design challenge that teams of graduate students are facing, and the solutions they devised, to develop autonomous vehicles for the worldwide speed race competition known as The Freescale Cup. The purpose of the competition is to design the fastest car able to complete an unknown racetrack autonomously. The challenge posed by the competition is an ideal teaching ground for engineering students that can improve with a working experience the theoretical aspects learned in class in different fields such as hard-real-time system theory, control theory, model-based design theory, and computer vision theory. Besides the technical aspects, as cars are developed by teams of students, the competition is also supporting the development of soft skills (such as team work, and communication skills) that are not normally addressed by classical curricula. The results achieved after three years of participation suggest that this approach is very effective in improving the quality of engineering curricula. Cautious NMPC with Gaussian Process Dynamics for Miniature Race Cars
This paper presents an adaptive high performance control method for autonomous miniature race cars. Racing dynamics are notoriously hard to model from first principles, which is addressed by means of a cautious nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) approach that learns to improve its dynamics model from data and safely increases racing performance. The approach makes use of a Gaussian Proce...
متن کاملLearning an Optimal Race Driver Policy using TORCS
According to [1] Americans drive approximately 3 billion miles per year. One way to increase the productivity of our society as a whole is to increase the speed with which people reach their intended destinations. Having an autonomous vehicle capable of high speed travel opens up new possibilities for fast travel by car. Control of a car at high speeds is a hard problem which has sparked compet...
متن کاملReal-Time Communication in Autonomous Robot Systems
Designing control and robotic systems as autonomous decentralized systems introduces a new degree of flexibility in the manufacturing and in the application of such systems. This flexibility is required for the systems to work in environments that are not totally predictable and that can change dynamically. In this paper, we present a new concept for real-time communication that supports this f...

We have found that separating the layers has ...
متن کاملAn Architecture Supporting Loose and Close Cooperation of Distributed Autonomous Systems
There is a general trend in designing distributed control systems to give an increasing amount of autonomy to the individual nodes of such systems. Autonomous nodes interact only loosely. But also, close cooperation under hard real-time constraints is required in certain situations. This paper analyzes approaches for structuring distributed control systems and presents an architecture integrati...
